Mission #44

On Board: Roger Love
Mission: Set Your Voice Free

The Co-Pilot:

Roger Love is an incredibly compelling -- and skilled -- vocal coach to the stars. His long list of famous clients includes, among many others, Demi Lovato, Gwen Stefani, Reese Witherspoon, and even the renowned Tony Robbins.

As you may have gathered from this snippet of his client list, Roger is one of the world’s leading authorities on voice. In fact, he’s the most commercially successful vocal coach in the speaking and singing fields. He’s been teaching voice since he was just 16 years old, and he brings all this talent and experience to this conversation.

Connect With Roger:

RogerLoveVocals on Facebook
@RogerLove1 on Twitter
RogerLove on Instagram

The Mission Log:

  • [04:10] - We hear about Roger’s background, including his early passion for singing and how this led him into teaching stars as a teenager. He also explains how this led him into becoming a speaking coach.
  • [08:13] - Does Roger think everyone can sing, or are there some people who just can’t? Some people are born with better voices than others, he says, but everyone has an original and unique voice. Even people born without great instruments have the potential to do well if they work hard at it.
  • [10:42] - Roger gives the example of Pavarotti, who decided to be a singer at around 35.
  • [11:44] - Roger discusses his love for taking people like Orion -- who loved singing as a child -- and helping them incorporate musicality into their speaking voices. He also explains that you only have about a second to make your first impression through speaking.
  • [14:45] - What are the five components of voice and how can we best use them? They’re pitch, pace, tone, melody, and volume. He gives some tips on volume, melody, pace.
  • [21:03] - Most people believe there are only two voices: chest voice and head voice. This can lead to speakers or singers getting trapped in one voice or the other because of the difficulty of transitioning between the two. Middle voice gives people the ability to sing between these two ranges without the voice breaking. Roger also explains why the middle and head voice are important even to speakers.
  • [26:05] - Sound waves from your voice vibrate the bodies of listeners. Roger explains why this is important. He also says that the people who sing or speak in the way he teaches for an hour a day increases life expectancy up to eight years (among several other benefits that he lists).
  • [29:25] - Roger tells us how he helped Tony Robbins keep from losing his voice and work through the tremendous amount of wear and tear on his voice.
  • [31:10] - John Gray’s voice wouldn’t work for Tony Robbins, and vice versa, and Roger demonstrates why. He then goes on to talk about how important it is to have different sounds and voices for each character you need to play.
  • [35:52] - “People all need to think about voice first,” Roger tells us. He emphasizes the importance of voice in interactions, and mentions his forthcoming book Set Your Voice Free. It’s a new, expanded edition of his first book, containing everything he’s learned in the 16 years since the original edition came out.
  • [37:02] - Roger talks about what he calls “overlapping frequencies,” which he believes is why children of different genders feel connected before puberty. Once puberty happens and men and women sound different, a divide is created. Overlapping frequencies are the ranges in which men’s and women’s voices tend to overlap.
  • [40:00] - We hear more about Roger’s new book. He also mentions that there’s a partnering website that comes with the book.
  • [42:30] - What makes the best female speakers great? Roger emphasizes the combination of the five voice components he mentioned before, and mentions having a physiology that matches those sounds. He also talks about the problems with parallel gestures -- doing the same thing with both hands at the same time.
  • [46:15] - Roger shares an exercise that can help speakers. Close your mouth, breathe in through your nose, and pretend there’s a balloon in your abdomen. When you breathe in, fill your abdomen; when you exhale, let your abdomen come back in. This is diaphragmatic breathing.
  • [52:21] - Voice is one of the most important ways of establishing self-confidence, Roger tells us.
  • [53:54] - What products of his do Roger recommend? First, he recommends his new book Set Your Voice Free again. He then recommends The Perfect Voice, for which Stellar Life listeners will receive a $50 discount!
  • [55:38] - What are Roger’s three tips to living a stellar life? 1. Record yourself speaking and listen attentively, paying attention to your volume. 2. Record yourself again, this time focusing on having more melody and “walking up the stairs.” 3. Record yourself once more, this time speaking only while your stomach is coming in.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

Unless you already tend to speak loudly, work on raising your volume. Don’t be afraid to speak loudly enough to be heard (by others, not just yourself).

Practice incorporating more melody into your speech. Many of us tend to speak monotonously, but incorporating melody will make your voice more compelling.

Practice shifting from downward melodies to upward stair-step melodies, as if the sound is walking up the stairs as you speak.

Mission: Reboot Your Life with Feng Shui

The Co-Pilot:

In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Kathryn Weber. Kathryn is a leading feng shui expert whose works have appeared in many prestigious magazine, and after hearing the depths of her expertise and wisdom in this conversation, it’s easy to understand why.

In addition to sharing her knowledge through her world-recognized feng shui e-zine the Red Lotus Letter, Kathryn teaches other feng shui experts how to run their businesses. She also does a great job of combining her feng shui knowledge with a witty, down-to-earth personality that makes the philosophy accessible.

Connect With Kathryn:

FengShuiKatie on Facebook
@FengShuiKatie on Twitter

  • [09:00] - We hear about how Kathryn incorporates feng shui into her identity. She explains that you don’t need to be in a constantly quasi-meditative state to use feng shui, and that energy and activity are good things.
  • [10:54] - Red is an important color for women, and Kathryn explains why.
  • [12:04] - What is feng shui in a nutshell? It was originally a study of time rather than space, Kathryn tells us.
  • [15:09] - Kathryn describes the trinity of luck for zodiac signs. She also describes how her tiger sign fits her.
  • [16:30] - We hear about how feng shui can influence your love life. If you’re a single woman, having images of single women in your home can make it more difficult to find a relationship, so Kathryn suggests including male art or imagery instead.
  • [17:59] - Kathryn talks about how to use feng shui to attract a man. Hint: having a headboard is more important than you might realize. She also discusses the importance of cooking even if you’re a single woman, and the fact that the stomach is the way to the heart.
  • [23:26] - Kathryn gives some suggestions for how to minimize family drama around the holidays by using feng shui.
  • [25:04] - What is the ideal color for the bedroom? Kathryn says it comes down to what makes you feel comfortable, but gives some tips on what to avoid, particularly metal headboards. She also says that today’s flat-screen TVs aren’t a problem in feng shui the way older TVs were. Floral bedrooms are also a problem, she explains.
  • [28:42] - Kathryn explains why we should avoid red walls in the bedroom, and says that any natural human skin colors are excellent colors for romance.
  • [29:58] - We hear more of Kathryn’s history while learning about feng shui.
  • [31:05] - What are Kathryn’s best tips and tools for creating abundance through feng shui? She talks about the importance of a beautiful front door, and explains that fresh paint and some plants or flowers can make a huge difference.
  • [34:40] - Kathryn talks about colors for front doors, and how the ideal depends on the direction it’s facing. She goes on to talk about the color purple.
  • [36:05] - Kathryn raves about oranges, especially about their symbolism of money in feng shui.
  • [37:53] - What feng shui tips are there for a wedding? We hear about color options and suggestions, and she and Orion discuss the colors for Orion’s upcoming wedding.
  • [40:43] - How does feng shui affect our productivity?
  • [45:10] - Kathryn explains how the ancient art of feng shui can apply to modern spaces such as websites. She suggests using colors that harmonize with the kind of work you do.
  • [47:32] - In relation to the quizzes available on her website, Kathryn talks about how to use a bagua to figure out how best to apply feng shui to your home.
  • [49:49] - Kathryn does a forecast every year, and offers a preview of three pieces of advice for 2017.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. What color resonates most deeply with you? Sit down with a piece of paper and jot down notes about what this color evokes or represents to better understand how it suits you.
  2. Take the calculator quizzes on Kathryn’s website to gain more insight into how best to incorporate feng shui techniques into your life and home.
  3. Determine your Chinese zodiac sign and examine how it fits you. You might learn something new and gain insight into yourself.

Mission #42

On Board: Dr. Helen L. Irlen
Mission: Live Brighter and Better Through the Science of Color

The Co-Pilot:

Dr. Helen L. Irlen is a global leader in the area of visual processing. She’s the founder of the Irlen Method, which emphasizes the importance of color in everyday function for many people. Through years of research, she has discovered that colored glasses or filters can make an incredible difference in how people’s brains function.

Fortunately, Helen has been generous with sharing her research and knowledge. There are close to two hundred affiliated Irlen centers worldwide in 45 countries. In addition, Helen has written several books, including most notably The Irlen Revolution: A Guide to Changing Your Perception and Your Life.

Connect With Helen:

The Mission Log:

  • [05:12] - Helen talks about herself and her mission in the world. To give us some insight into who she is, she tells us a few stories about her life.
  • [08:43] - Why was Helen interested in the psych ward, and what was the driving force that motivated her to pursue her research?
  • [11:29] - Helen goes into more detail about what the Irlen Syndrome is. She also describes the experience of working one-on-one with adults.
  • [17:06] - How do you become a good listener? Helen says to avoid imposing your own issues on someone else, so you’re a blank slate and can really hear what people are saying.
  • [18:51] - The Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing deficit that you can inherit or acquire (or both). It leads to difficulties in areas such as reading, academic skills, attention and concentration, depth perception, and more.
  • [19:34] - The symptoms of Irlen Syndrome can vary, Helen explains. She also talks about the percents of people who have the syndrome. We hear about how flourescent light can be an issue for many people.
  • [23:36] - Orion volunteers to be Helen’s guinea pig, which allows listeners to hear several minutes of Helen’s questioning process for beginning to assess whether someone might have Irlen Syndrome.
  • [28:15] - Helen describes the issues that can be triggered for certain people by sunlight, bright lights, fluorescent lights, and so on.
  • [29:50] - How does Helen help the people who come to her? She suggests starting with the tests on her website.
  • [32:20] - Helen talks about what colored filters and lenses can do to help our brains.
  • [34:01] - We hear about how Helen’s research and methods can help people who have been in the military with various problems and symptoms. She also discusses its uses for people on the autism spectrum, as well as high-functioning professional adults who want peak performance.
  • [39:21] - Helen speaks emotionally about the impact that her method has had on veterans and marines.
  • [42:07] - Helen offers two funny stories of the effects that Irlen filters have had on users.
  • [43:18] - You can inherit Irlen Syndrome, which doesn’t always show up in childhood and may present in college or later.
  • [47:02] - What would Helen like her legacy to be? In her answer, she explains why she isn’t interested in retiring: because she can’t think of anything more rewarding than what she’s already doing every day.
  • [50:29] - Helen shares her three top tips for living a stellar life: 1. Understand that your brain is uniquely different from anyone else’s brain. 2. Don’t buy into what other people have said to you about yourself. 3. Give yourself a hug everyday and tell yourself how wonderful you are.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Practice becoming a better listener. Do your best to set your own issues and thoughts aside to become a blank slate and listen to what the person you’re talking to is actually saying.
  2. Think about how you feel after you’ve been focused on reading for a while. If you experience physical symptoms, you may fall on the Irlen Syndrome continuum.
  3. Take the “Long Self-Test for Irlen Syndrome.” This test will help you determine whether you’re one of the many people unknowingly suffering from Irlen Syndrome.

Mission #41

On Board: Brian Traichel
Mission: Linkedin Money Making Secrets

The Co-Pilot:

This week, you’ll have the pleasure and privilege of hearing some great LinkedIn advice and insight from a true expert, Brian Traichel. Brian discovered LinkedIn by chance in 2004, and since then has been putting it to great use to form connections and grow his business.

As he shares his best-kept secrets about LinkedIn, Brian reveals that the key is in forming meaningful connections. And it’s no wonder he has this sort of perspective, when he’s worked with greats including Brian Tracy, Michael Gerber, Tony Robbins, and Barbara De Angelis. His sales strategies are based on real connections and providing value, and in this episode, he walks listeners through exactly how to form these meaningful, authentic business relationships.

Connect With Brian:

Brian Traichel on LinkedIn
BrianTraichel on Facebook

The Mission Log:

  • [04:28] - Brian starts things off by telling us a bit about himself, his career history, and how he discovered LinkedIn.
  • [06:14] - Why is LinkedIn so powerful? Brian talks about the value of LinkedIn’s nature as a business site.
  • [08:35] - Your LinkedIn profile may be the first thing people see about you online, so it needs to have the equivalent of “curb appeal,” Brian tells us.
  • [10:02] - Brian talks about what kind of profile picture you need on your LinkedIn profile.
  • [10:34] - In your description, you only have a few sections to capture someone’s attention. Brian lists what should be in your summary section. He goes on to talk about the 22 sections of a full LinkedIn profile, and explains what belongs in the “education” section.
  • [13:45] - One of the roles of your LinkedIn profile is to answer questions people have about you and your skills and abilities.
  • [14:53] - Brian reveals that he actually uses the free version of LinkedIn, not the premium version. He then goes on to estimate that 80% of his business has come through LinkedIn.
  • [16:18] - Once you have your picture and profile filled out on LinkedIn, what do you do next? Brian’s suggestions: share your Facebook updates there as well, and join LinkedIn groups. He also describes the power of LinkedIn groups, and how they make it possible to reach thousands of people in minutes.
  • [18:16] - Brian talks about the etiquette of connecting with people. For him, it’s all about personal connections.
  • [19:55] - Brian shares his script for what to say when you call people from LinkedIn. His first example is of a client calling a provider, and the second is of a provider calling a potential client. In both examples, his emphasis is on making a human connection, not talking business. Once the connection is made, he suggests drip marketing.
  • [22:59] - We learn more about drip marketing through LinkedIn. What Brian does is endorse each connection for a skill every week, so that his name will come to mind when that person needs someone who provides his services.
  • [25:15] - Brian suggests investing at least 30 minutes a day in LinkedIn. He explains why.
  • [26:04] - What do you do if you aren’t connected to someone and haven’t spoken with them, but want to connect with or talk to them? How is the answer different if the person isn’t in your industry?
  • [27:33] - Brian talks about whether to accept everyone who sends you a request on LinkedIn. He accepts anyone who has at least 50 connections, a picture, and a summary.
  • [28:36] - How many people does Brian connect with a day? How does he keep track of them? He suggests using LinkedIn’s tagging feature rather than Excel or another tracking system.
  • [29:14] - We hear more of Brian’s thoughts on groups. He especially recommends starting your own LinkedIn group.
  • [31:29] - Brian explains what LinkedIn Pulse is. He says it’s basically your LinkedIn feed.
  • [32:03] - LinkedIn is better than Facebook for Brian’s purposes, and he tells us why.
  • [32:27] - Brian gives his little-known secrets, including instructions on how to view people’s profiles invisibly and how to change how to see who can view your connections.
  • [34:28] - The #1 thing you should never do on LinkedIn is sell to someone after they accept your LinkedIn invitation.
  • [35:05] - Brian talks about best practices for LinkedIn groups.
  • [37:18] - What are Brian’s three tips to living a stellar life? 1. Be your own guru (meaning you should follow your gut). He gives an example of how he did this. 2: Become a minimalist and declutter. 3: Exercise the law of non-attachment. He and Orion go on to discuss the value of non-attachment.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

Before you go out to try to make new business connections, go through your current network. You’ll likely find people who you didn’t realize you were already connected to.

Upload a headshot to your LinkedIn profile. Your attire should be business casual. While a professional picture is great, a good iPhone picture is far better than nothing.

Rewrite your LinkedIn summary to address the following topics: who you are, what you do, what problem you solve, and how you do it.

Mission #40

On Board: Sarah Michael
Mission: How to be Authentic in your Videos, Branding and Marketing

The Co-Pilot:

This time on Stellar Life, we have the absolute pleasure of hearing from the lovely Sarah Michael. Sarah works with spiritual entrepreneurs ready to do both inner and outer work. As the founder of Sparkling Results Coaching and the creator of Project: YOU, she guides clients toward creating a business that does good and feels good.

In this conversation, Sarah emphasizes the importance of being authentic -- and sets a wonderful example. She’s warm, engaging, and utterly herself as she walks us through women’s deepest motivations, how to come to peace with your inner cavewoman, and the best ways to communicate your message.

The Mission Log:

  • [04:08] - Sarah gives us an introduction to who she is. We hear about her experience in marketing and branding, and her specialty -- what she calls “the intangible of the intangibles.”
  • [06:18] - Most of Sarah’s work is with women, because she focuses on how feminine survival instincts show up in business. She describes how ingrained neural pathways shape women’s desires.
  • [08:41] - “Masculine and feminine” are different from “male and female” or “men and women,” and Sarah talks about why. She then explains that the masculine urge is to protect and provide, as opposed to the feminine desire to connect.
  • [10:26] - Sarah digs further into the differences between what constitutes safety for the masculine and feminine.
  • [11:11] - We learn more about Project: YOU, which Sarah started after noticing that people didn’t see all of her or her work until there was already a connection. It emerged from a self-imposed authenticity challenge.
  • [14:34] - Sarah talks about posting videos herself, this time emphasizing the importance of discernment.
  • [17:35] - Orion and Sarah talk about the possibility of oversharing, with Sarah advising that you be careful of your details and make sure your posts and videos make sense to others. The specific advice she gives is “Don’t tell the story until you’ve stopped bleeding.”
  • [19:38] - Does Sarah generally have an outline for her video, or does she just talk from the heart? It’s a combination, she reveals. She emphasizes authenticity, which means not scripting or memorizing things.
  • [23:50] - Is it better to talk faster or slower in your videos? Sarah emphasizes that it’s better to speak more slowly, and gives an explanation of the science behind the reason this is important. She and Orion then debate whether to speak more or less quickly when presenting your offer.
  • [28:11] - Sarah explains what she thinks are the biggest challenges that her community’s members in general face. First is the inner problem of not letting oneself “be enough,” second is the challenge of describing what they do in a way that others immediately understand, and third is having taken lots of training and courses, and having lots of marketing materials that don’t necessarily work together.
  • [30:38] - How do you get over self doubts? Sarah speaks specifically to the feminine in her answer. Her answer involves creating a safe space, and she elaborates on what this safe space may be.
  • [34:00] - Sarah talks about the possibility of declaring yourself safe. Orion responds, exploring how important it is to women to feel safe. This leads to more discussion of the differences between men and women.
  • [37:47] - What are Sarah’s tips on refining your message?  Her biggest tip is to use what she describes as “vivid words.” These are words that paint a picture in the other person’s head as close as possible to what you mean. She gives some specific examples of abstract versus concrete words.
  • [40:20] - Orion asks if Sarah means simplifying things in a way that a five-year-old would understand. Sarah clarifies, and she and Orion discuss the words Orion uses for what she does.
  • [42:16] - We hear Sarah’s explanation of how people can refine their message. She says you need to identify what your clients believe their needs are, and then address those in all of your messages.
  • [44:45] - How does Sarah build and nourish her community? She talks about the importance of receiving, as well as giving.
  • [45:32] - The craziest thing Sarah has ever done is having gotten her belly button pierced at 24, with no forethought or planning. It was completely unlike her to jump into something like that without knowing what she was getting into. In response, Orion shares her own belly button piercing story.
  • [48:26] - When asked about the best thing that’s ever happened to her, Sarah has a hard time coming up with just one! She settles on going to Loral Langemeier’s 3 Days to Cash workshop, which she describes as a safe space.
  • [51:10] - Sarah gives us her three top tips for living a stellar life: 1. Know what you want your stellar life to look like. 2. Develop, cultivate, and nurture relationships that will get you there. 3. Be yourself! Be as much of yourself as possible, in all situations.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

What would a self-imposed authenticity challenge look like for you? Think of a few examples, and then work toward implementing them and living more authentically.

Look into Sarah’s Project: YOU. If it sounds like something that might work for you, sign up and participate wholeheartedly in the three-week process.

Mission #39

On Board: JP Sears
Mission: Awaken With JP- The Ultra Spiritual Guru

The Co-Pilot:

“The heart and soul of all my work is helping people to help themselves,” JP Sears informs us. Perhaps best-known for his “Ultra Spiritual” series on YouTube, JP is far more than just another internet comedian. He’s a successful and effective emotional healing coach (with infinitely more genuine kindness and empathy than the self-centered and oblivious character he plays on YouTube).

In today’s episode, we learn about who JP really is. It becomes clear that his YouTube videos aren’t in fact mockery of the beliefs his character holds; instead, they’re him practicing a form of non-attachment to his own beliefs. He gently and humorously explores the importance of being exactly who you are, choosing vulnerability, and letting yourself shine.

Connect With JP:

AwakenWIthJP on Facebook

@AwakenWithJP on Twitter
AwakenWithJP on Instagram

The Mission Log:

  • [04:24] - JP starts things off by telling us a bit about himself.
  • [06:02] - The most spiritual experience JP has ever had is living his life unapologetically, he explains.
  • [08:52] - What does JP do to allow himself to be himself? In his answer, he reflects on Orion’s story as well as his own past.
  • [12:07] - When JP was growing up, he didn’t have specific role models. As a child, he looked up to various pro athletes. In hindsight, he liked “watching people express their greatness.” As an adult, his first real role model was Paul Chek of the C.H.E.K Institute.
  • [13:24] - JP explains what drew him to Paul.
  • [14:53] - We hear about JP’s perspective on what an “alpha male” is. He and Orion then discuss the difference between the traditional views of alpha males and the contemporary alpha male.
  • [17:25] - What’s the craziest thing JP has ever done? After some musing over the question, he concludes that saying yes feels like the craziest thing.
  • [19:54] - Orion takes a turn and shares the craziest things that she’s done. She and JP then discuss her experience in moving to Japan, and what profoundness she got from it.
  • [22:04] - JP responds to being asked whether he has any phobias by saying he has a phobia of having phobias. He then goes on to give a more serious answer.
  • [23:26] - Orion asks JP what he would take from his house if it were on fire and he only had time to grab three things. Coincidentally, it turned out he had to evacuate his house the day before. His answers are his dog Zephyr, his computer, and his video camera.
  • [24:53] - JP explores the concept of being attached to non-attachment. He also explains how this is how he balances making the types of videos he does with his own personal beliefs.
  • [26:67] - His ex-girlfriends are JP’s greatest teachers, he says. He then goes on to explore what he learned from his parents -- and his dog.
  • [30:31] - After having heard from JP about his lessons from his dog Zephyr, Orion playfully discusses the three lessons that she has learned from her cat.
  • [32:18] - JP talks about sexual energy, describing it as “a river of life that flows through us.”
  • [35:38] - What are JP’s practices for increasing sexual energy? He clarifies that he still has a lot of work to do in overcoming old shame that he projects onto sexual energy.
  • [39:37] - Orion talks about Jaiya and sexual blueprints, which you can hear more about in Stellar Life Episode 3. She and JP then discuss dimming our light to let others shine, and how that relates to sexual energy.
  • [43:21] - What is the difference between being alive and truly living?
  • [44:30] - JP talks about what he gained from his experience with Tony Robbins.
  • [48:32] - We hear about Orion’s experiences with Tony Robbins -- and she recommends his events as a place for single people to meet like-minded singles.
  • [50:10] - JP discusses how his friend Karen ended up becoming his assistant. His advice on hiring someone is to look for a feeling of trust.
  • [53:28] - What are JP’s three tips for living a stellar life? 1: Seek to be who you are, not who you want to be. 2: Be creative and express your creativity. 3: Practice vulnerability.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

How would your life look different if you lived it unapologetically? Envision what that life would look like, and then work on growing toward that life.

Eventually the pain of hiding who we are outweighs the pain of stepping into who we are. If you’ve reached this point, it’s time to be brave; release the persona you’ve created and become yourself.

Practice differentiating between anticipated or imagined pain and potential real pain, and make choices based on the latter. Often the reality isn’t nearly as bad as our fear of it.

Mission #38

On Board: Dave Asprey
Mission: Hacking Your Mind Part Two

The Co-Pilot:

If you’re here, it’s probably because you’ve already heard part one of our two-part series with Dave Asprey (and if you haven’t, go listen to it and then come back -- it’s great!). While you probably already know quite a bit about Dave from the previous episode, he’s remarkable enough to deserve a recap. He’s the author of New York Times bestselling book The Bulletproof Diet, and the man behind the other Bulletproof products such as Bulletproof Coffee and Bulletproof Radio. Thanks to his expertise in biohacking, he fully intends to live to be 180 years old -- and he’s dedicated to sharing his knowledge and advice.

In this second part of the two-part series, Dave gives listeners a plethora of valuable (and interesting!) information. We learn about his experience with stem cell injections into the brain, the profound effect that mold can have on health and even personality, and his plans for the forthcoming Bulletproof Labs. Finally, he spends a while talking about neurofeedback, offering a compelling depiction of its potential benefits.

The Mission Log:

  • [03:37] -- Dave talks briefly about the term “hacking” as related to the body and mind.
  • [04:07] -- We learn that Dave is one of only two people in the world who have had prophylactic stem cell injections into the brain.
  • [04:48] -- Dave’s documentary about mold, called MOLDY, actually helped Orion’s sister, as we learn here. Dave then goes on to give some information about the making of the documentary.
  • [06:36] -- Orion gives us some more insight into what she saw in her sister, and Dave responds with advice about when to get rid of your current doctor.
  • [07:47] -- It took about six weeks of Dave’s life to make the documentary, and several hundred thousand dollars, but he says it’s all worth it if helped Orion’s sister, even if it hadn’t impacted anyone else.
  • [10:21] -- Dave’s next book is about mitochondria, and he explains why.
  • [10:54] -- It turns out Dave already has a lot of the equipment that will be at the forthcoming Bulletproof Labs (which will be in Santa Monica), and tests it all on himself.
  • [11:57] -- Orion talks about her own experience with the REDcharger that will be available when the lab opens. She said that it made her feel as relaxed as if she’d spent all day at the beach.
  • [12:32] -- The virtual floating tank is Orion’s favorite of the equipment she tried. Dave explains more about what a floating tank is, and both the problems and the benefits associated with it. He also tells us how the tank he designed is different than a traditional tank (you don’t even need to get wet!).
  • [15:12] -- Some people who have used these tanks have experienced things that could be dreams or flashes of a past life. Consciously getting into a theta state is where all the good things happen, Dave explains.
  • [16:38] -- Dave elaborates on what neurofeedback is. He describes it as holding a mirror up to the brain in a way it can understand.
  • [18:20] -- To illustrate how neurofeedback works, Dave compares the idea of being in a Zen monastery to meditating with rubber bumpers. He then goes on to talk about neurofeedback augmented retrofeeding, which lets you reset certain things in your brain.
  • [20:39] -- Dave tells us what effect this had on other people in his life who has tried it. He says it quiets the negative voice most of us hear. The invisible self-sabotaging parts become visible.
  • [22:14] -- You can replace years of meditation with a few years of neurofeedback. Dave explains its other benefits, including an increase in intelligence.
  • [23:56] -- Dave tells us his three tips for living a stellar life: 1. Practice gratitude every day. 2. Accept that if you have a food craving, it’s your fault. 3. Address your physical issues.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

Watch Dave’s documentary MOLDY. If it leads you to believe that you may be suffering from mold-related issues, take steps to ensure your home is mold-free.

Research neurotherapy and contact a provider in your area to discuss whether it’s right for you. It tends to be costly, but the results can be priceless.

Every night, find three things you’re grateful for. Write them down in a journal to get in the habit of identifying and expressing gratitude.

Mission #38

On Board: Dave Asprey
Mission: Hacking Your Body, Part One

The Co-Pilot:

This time on Stellar Life, we have a guest so special that we had to split the episode into two parts! Dave Asprey is the man behind the Bulletproof brand, which includes Bulletproof Coffee, Bulletproof Radio, and the New York Times bestselling book The Bulletproof Diet. He’s spent around 30 years and almost $1 million on biohacking his body. But Dave wasn’t always interested in health: he used to weigh a hundred pounds more than he does now, and got his start in the technology industry.

In this first part of the two-part series, we hear a lot about Dave’s background. He explains how (and why) he made the shift from tech into biohacking, and what he hopes to get out of providing all this information. We also have the pleasure of hearing his first-hand experience with some biohacking techniques, and he provides some valuable tips and insights into how to do your own biohacking.

Connect With Dave Asprey:
@bulletproofexec on Twitter
Bulletproofexecutive on Facebook
dave.asprey on Instagram

The Mission Log:

  • [05:42] -- Dave introduces himself and explains more about who he is and his experiences and credentials.
  • [06:33] -- We learn more about Dave’s introduction to biohacking, which started around 30 years ago. He also mentions The Better Baby Book, then goes on to give his definition of the term “biohacking.”
  • [09:42] -- Orion asks Dave what we can do with stem cell therapy. He reveals that he plans to live to be at least 180 years old. He goes into quite a bit of detail about the stem cell retrieval process, as well as the culturing process.
  • [11:30] -- Dave explains more about what he wanted to do with stem cells in his own body (and what he’s already done with them). He’s gone so far as to have stem cells injected into his “boy parts,” to use his term.
  • [14:17] -- Dave’s wife had a similar procedure done, which clearly had a very positive effect on her as well.
  • [14:50] -- What are the three top lessons Dave learned from hacking his body?
  • [16:55] -- The Bulletproof Diet, in a nutshell, is a diet designed to create maximum willpower. The side effects are more energy and a complete decimation of food cravings.
  • [17:57] -- Dave explains some details about how certain foods are good for some people, but can have negative effects on other people. For more information, you can read The Bulletproof Diet or start cooking from Bulletproof: The Cookbook.
  • [19:32] -- Dave has a gift for Stellar Life listeners! You can download The Bulletproof Diet Roadmap, which tells you everything in the book in one page.
  • [20:14] -- There’s a difference between brain octane oil and MCT oil, as Dave explains here.
  • [21:19] -- Dave explains why he started the Bulletproof business. He gushes about his gratitude for being able to help people.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

Do your own research into stem cell therapy to understand what it’s capable of. There have been huge breakthroughs; it’s not just about cloning sheep anymore.

Come up with one specific thing that you want to change about your body. Instead of trying to figure out whether you can do it, figure out how to do it.

Download the Bulletproof Diet Roadmap, print it, and stick it on your refrigerator. Try to become more conscious of choosing foods that it encourages.

Mission #37

On Board: Samantha Pilbeam
Mission: Attracting Dream Relationships and a Dream Life

The Co-Pilot:

Our co-pilot on this episode is the lovely Samantha Pilbeam, a businesswoman and entrepreneur who manifested her dream life -- and even her ideal partner -- through the Law of Attraction and following a continuing path of self-improvement.

Samantha, who lives in the UK with her partner Greg, was once stuck in a life characterized by low self-esteem and unhealthy relationships. Using various tools and techniques, she crafted a better life for herself and became the happy, fulfilled, successful woman she is today.

Thanks to her own life experiences, she’s passionate about helping others and making the world a better place. That’s what she’s here to do today. In this episode, you’ll learn all about how she manifested her ideal life, and the daily steps you can take to do the same. As Orion puts it, “Your vibration needs to match the life you want.”

Connect With Samantha Pilbeam:
[email protected]

The Mission Log:

  • [05:11] - Samantha shares a bit about herself, including where she lives and a broad overview of her relationship with her partner.
  • [05:50] - We learn about Samantha’s history of being attracted to men who weren’t right for her, or drawn into dysfunctional relationships.
  • [06:16] - Samantha’s first role models were her parents, who had a dysfunctional relationship. She describes their differences.
  • [07:03] - The type of men who Samantha attracted (and was attracted to) were very similar to her father.
  • [07:44] - Are women going to the wrong places to find love? Samantha indirectly answers that via her own life story.
  • [08:27] - Samantha describes her previous life at the time that she started to realize she needed to make a change, around ten years ago.
  • [09:31] - What was the void, and what was the catalyst for change?
  • [10:24] - The moment that made Samantha realized she really needed a change was when her then-partner punched her in the face. Orion and Samantha discuss how sometimes it takes painful moments to make you realize you need change, and they can be a gift in disguise.
  • [12:14] - At the time, Samantha’s friends and family provided a support group for her.
  • [13:35] - Samantha reflects on her previous relationships, pointing out that what she then thought was “love” wasn’t really love, and that low self-esteem contributed to her decisions.
  • [16:02] - We hear more about Samantha’s life before she learned how to love herself.
  • [17:10] - If you come from a lineage of being treated unkindly, it’s up to you to stand up and change that tradition, Orion explains.
  • [17:39] - Samantha agrees with Orion’s explanation, then applies the same concept to the relation with money. She explores the difference between having a lot of money and experiencing abundance.
  • [18:46] - Samantha opened a beauty business during the middle of the recession, and discovered breathwork and rebirthing around that same time.
  • [19:35] - She describes the experience of doing rebirthing, and how much it can vary from time to time. She also tells us a bit about the self-discoveries that she made this way.
  • [21:10] - Samantha discusses how often she did breathwork, and the three different modules in which she did it.
  • [21:57] - Breathwork isn’t just motivational; it involves a lot of work, dealing with a lot of pain. Samantha noticed that after doing breathwork, she started to love herself more.
  • [23:13] - We hear about how Samantha used breathwork and meditation to help overcome her issues surrounding money. Darius Barazandeh helped her with this.
  • [24:23] - Samantha tells us about the men who started showing up in her life after she started doing breathwork and changing herself.
  • [25:39] - True masculinity doesn’t need to take stereotypically masculine forms. For Samantha, true masculinity is a man who treats a woman like a goddess.
  • [26:34] - The man who Samantha is currently with is exactly what she wrote down when she did her manifesting. We also hear about her previous relationship.
  • [27:42] - Several years earlier, Samantha had taken a Law of Attraction course by Tony Robbins (but in her case, led by Joseph McClendon). She stopped for a while after being freaked out by how quickly she started attracting things into her life.
  • [30:10] - At the time, she explains, she wasn’t ready to receive the life she wanted. Part of her wanted to stay in “suffering mode” because that was the life she was used to.
  • [31:14] - When Samantha next used the Law of Attraction, after having done the breathwork, she was ready to receive. She was also ready for the element of surrender that it required.
  • [32:08] - Orion steps in for a moment to explain what she means by “surrender.”
  • [32:55] - Samantha agrees with Orion’s description, and goes on to explain that her fear was also part of what led to her being in those unhealthy relationships.
  • [33:33] - How did Samantha find Mr. Right?
  • [35:30] - How did she start believing in the Law of Attraction in a way that allowed her to manifest the things she had written on her list?
  • [36:18] - Samantha took about 15 to 20 minutes every morning for her exercise in believing in the Law of Attraction.
  • [37:00] - By the end of the two weeks Samantha took to make herself believe in the Law of Attraction, she let go of the idea because she believed in it so fully that she just knew it would work. She set up a Meetup group several months later, and her partner Greg showed up at the first meeting.
  • [38:10] - Samantha tells us about how she and Greg started dating, and how she realized that he was “the one” for her.
  • [40:22] - What has Samantha done to keep the love alive (and the relationship healthy) after the initial sparks of the relationship wore off?
  • [41:54] - In a successful relationship, both parties take responsibility for their own happiness rather than trying to find it in their partner.
  • [43:48] - Samantha’s three tips for living a stellar life are: appreciate what you have and show gratitude, give yourself love, and give back to people and the world.
  • [44:20] - Samantha offers listeners a gift: her husband Greg is an NLP (neuro linguistic programming) trainer, and they’re offering two listeners a free NLP course early next year (January 4-10 in the Lake District in the UK). Flights and accommodation are not included, but the course is free. To enter, write Samantha a short email about why you think you should be picked and explaining your path and how this will help you (and how you will help the world). Send this to her at [email protected].

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Pain can be a catalyst for change. Write down three recent life events that have been painful (or issues that continue to cause you pain), and then, for each one, three ways that you can turn that pain into positive change.
  2. Every morning, look in the mirror and take five minutes to practice valuing yourself. Tell yourself “I love you,” and look for the beauty reflected in the mirror -- focusing on both your internal and external beauty.
  3. We all want more money, but money doesn’t create a sense of abundance. Take ten minutes each day for a month to start a gratitude journal. Explore the forms of abundance that you do have in your life.

  • [02:30] - We hear about the best thing that happened to Shanda this week.
  • [02:57] - Shanda introduces herself and explains that she helps people create cash flow--and also how to be generous with that cash flow.
  • [04:02] - Humble beginnings and a broken family serve as empowering factors for Shanda, and she gives us some insight into this. We also learn about the value of hard moments in life.
  • [06:22] - Joel Osteen’s new book, Think Better, Live Better, can help you get your head in the right space to transform pain into positive change.
  • [07:22] - Shanda talks about the difference between intellectually knowing that you should do something versus actually taking your own advice and surrendering into the coaching.
  • [08:15] - We learn about the turning point from when Shanda had $500 in an envelope in her closet to when she transformed into the woman she is today. It took the thought of going back to Canada to push her into figuring out a way to change her life (and be able to stay in the U.S.).
  • [10:24] - Sometimes an opportunity is present, but we stop short of finding the solution. Shanda gives an example of how showing up and pushing for what you want eventually gets you there.
  • [11:22] - Shanda answers Orion’s question of whether showing up and going for what you want is the secret ingredient that makes women successful. She tells us we have to “stop stopping” and gives us an example of a woman who is too hard on herself.
  • [12:21] - Shanda tells us what she thinks is the biggest secret to success.
  • [13:10] - How do we know whether to keep going or whether to quit (or at least change directions)?
  • [13:20] - How can we get over “I’m not good enough”? Shanda reiterates her point again: “Complete what you start.” She then elaborates on how this applies to making money and how that, in turn, means you can make a difference in the world.
  • [14:22] - We learn about how important it is to keep your word to yourself by completing what you start. She memorably tells us, “Don’t hit snooze on your life!”
  • [15:10] - Does Shanda have any advice about the fact that many people’s self-worth is intimately linked to their income or financial situation?
  • [17:19] - Orion asks whether Shanda has any fear of rejection, and Shanda muses over the question. She explains how a fear of rejection has manifested itself in her life.
  • [18:09] - She gives advice on how to improve your fear of rejection by giving up the idea of perfection or comparison.
  • [19:02] - Shanda offers a new perspective on fears: they’re a sign that you’re stretching outside your comfort zone, so in a way they’re a good thing.
  • [19:35] - How does Shanda help people break through their fears about money abundance and achieving goals? (Hint: it’s probably not what you would expect!)
  • [21:27] - Shanda gives a compelling example of how endurance running--her answer to the previous question--is a more wide-spread solution among successful people than we may realize. She references the book Living with a SEAL: 31 Days Training with the Toughest Man on the Planet by Jesse Itzler.
  • [23:05] - When Orion asks about the fastest way to grow a business, Shanda’s answer is simple: “Build an email list and learn how to sell to it.” Of course, that leads to the question of the best way to build an email list, and Shanda answers in detail.
  • [24:24] - Shanda explains a bit about her book Core Calling: How to Build a Business That Gives You a Freedom Lifestyle in 2 Years or Less.
  • [25:01] - “Connection is currency,” says Shanda, and this is particularly applicable to email lists. She uses everyday examples from her life to connect with her readers and inspire them to grow.
  • [26:12] - Shanda talks about the value of “flextime,” which means she doesn’t work the last week of every month or the month of December. She applies this to the concept of athletes and recovery.
  • [29:46] - Flextime has made a huge difference for Shanda, and she explains both the good and the bad of the initial foray into flextime.
  • [30:19] - What is Shanda’s success system?
  • [30:51] - Where does Shanda draw boundaries in terms of her generosity? She explains that she doesn’t have boundaries.
  • [32:18] - How does Shanda’s belief in the Law of Attraction work for her?
  • [33:12] - Through the stories of a Porsche and a Facebook team, Shanda explains how you see what you want--and how keeping your eyes on what you want can help you get it.
  • [35:40] - Shanda gives another example of how opening someone up to a possibility can lead to positive results, using a story from Wayne Dyer, then relates that to a health situation in her own life.
  • [37:08] - Shanda says that “being obsessed with the end result” will lead to positive things happening quite quickly, a concept she illustrates with the story of finding her fiancé and starting a family.
  • [38:20] - We hear about the advice and coaching that Shanda got when she was in search of a lasting relationship. By following her coach’s rules, Shanda developed a new understanding of how to approach relationships.
  • [39:40] - Shanda creates the success in her company based on three formulas. There are also formulas that make her relationship work. These formulas, and the way you think, have a profound impact on your life.
  • [40:29] - Having a baby with someone she’d known for only three months is the craziest thing she’s ever done, Shanda tells us--and it clearly worked well for her!
  • [41:13] - Orion asks Shanda her three tips for living a stellar life. The answers include figuring out your finances, taking care of your body, and tithing or giving back.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. There are wise pieces of advice that we intellectually know but don’t actually follow. Identify an instance where you aren’t following your own advice, and then resolve to “surrender into the coaching.”
  2. Write down two or three hardships you’ve been through. Then, for each one, write down several ways the hardship has actually led to positive outcomes in your life.
  3. Shanda believes one key to success is to “stop stopping.” Think about something that you’ve given up on recently, whether from frustration, boredom, or a sense that it will never change. How can you keep pushing at this issue until it resolves successfully?
