Nick Cownie is an Australian mindset change expert, the author of 7 Minute Mindset, and an in-demand speaker, coach, and mentor to thousands of people across the world. As Nick explains, the seven things that most often prevent people from living the lives they want are all contained within the word FAILURE itself, and this is an easy way to remember and recognize them. He’s someone who has helped me personally with my mindset, and I’m excited for him to share his wisdom and insight with you today!

The Mission Log:

  • [02:54] - Nick starts things off by sharing a little about what he does. He also reveals the impact that the events that occurred the day after he turned 21 have had on his life path.
  • [06:38] - We learn more about how Nick dealt with his PTSD, and how this led him to get involved with neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).
  • [10:58] - What is the fast phobia cure from NLP? As he answers, Nick explains that this cure is also called visual-kinesthetic dissociation.
  • [13:47] - Nick goes into more depth about what he means by “fluff” in NLP, which he has just mentioned he finds to be a problem.
  • [15:55] - Most of Nick’s clients these days are people looking to dramatically increase the effectiveness of their sales team, he explains. He also reveals that you can trace almost any issue anyone has to one of two things: fear and feelings about (lack of) worthiness.
  • [21:06] - Nick points out that very few people are genuinely in a -10 scenario by the scale he has just been talking about. He then discusses how he helps people who are on the negative side of this scale.
  • [24:32] - Nick explains that there are seven things that people do that stop them from living the kind of life they want, which fit into the acronym FAILURE.
  • [25:01] - The first issue in the FAILURE acronym is fear. As he discusses this topic, Nick explores the difference between fear and anxiety.
  • [28:19] - The letter “A” in this acronym stands for attention displacement, which means that you’re putting your attention in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • [29:53] - “I” stands for indecision. In explaining the role of indecision in not living the life you want, Nick shares a powerful quote: “Every decision should be made within the space of seven breaths.” He then reveals what an incredible difference this concept has made in his life. He and Orion then discuss the importance of exchanging value instead of getting things for free.
  • [37:27] - We’ve now reached the “L” in FAILURE, which is lack of action. The opposite habit of lack of action is not actually just action, but rather consistent action. In explaining this, he talks about making what he calls micro-commitments.
  • [41:50] - “U” stands for unrealistic expectations, which is particularly relevant now in the era of internet marketers. Nick and Orion discuss the Law of Attraction and the importance of taking action.
  • [45:25] - “R” is for repeating patterns. As Nick points out, all six points so far have been internal.
  • [46:08] - “E” stands for external negative influences, and is the first (and only) of the points that is about what happens to you through no doing of your own.
  • [48:28] - What are some quick things listeners can do to break through their own negative habits? The two ways that change happen are inside-out and outside-in, Nick explains. He then offers insight to help listeners immediately start breaking the FAILURE habits.
  • [56:06] - Nick offers his three top tips to living a stellar life. 1. Choose freedom. 2. Defy expectations. 3. Don’t die waiting.
  • [59:06] - Nick lists some ways people can find him online.

Today we're talking with Louis Di Bianco, a professional storyteller with experience as a screen and stage actor, teacher, and business presentation coach. A great scene often throws the audience into the middle of a conflict that’s already happening, immediately arousing their curiosity and drawing their attention. He brings his experience to help us become clear, powerful communicators and superstars who can tell their stories in ways that are engaging, compelling, and breathtaking.

The Mission Log:

  • [03:27] - We start things off by learning a little bit about Louis, what he does, and how he got started in storytelling as a child. He then shares his roundabout life story, which includes ending up studying the unlikely field of accounting.
  • [08:26] - Louis actually enjoyed the study of accounting, he reveals, but knew it wasn’t his lifelong career. He then shares more of his story, describing his change of major to English literature and how he eventually used his acting skills to teach business-people.
  • [12:28] - How did Louis translate his skills on stage to the business world, and what are some of the most important things that he taught these people to do?
  • [13:56] - Louis offers one tip that will immediately help listeners become better presenters, involving an “in late, out early” approach to speeches and presentations.
  • [20:27] - We learn another possible way to compellingly open a speech: starting with a question. He offers a few examples in response to topics Orion suggests, and then offers an example of using a prop instead of a question.
  • [24:05] - How does Louis come up with these brilliant openers? In response, he demystifies the idea of brilliance, explaining that “everyone is brilliant.”
  • [27:28] - Louis describes what he believes is one of the most important keys to powerful communication: using all five of your senses.
  • [30:08] - Louis gives us a rule that he offers people from his acting experience: “show, don’t tell.” He elaborates on what he means by this, tying it into his previous point of addressing all five senses.
  • [31:30] - We learn more about how Louis’ stage acting experience contributes to his storytelling, from his perspective. He and Orion then talk about the importance of body language.
  • [35:48] - Does Louis memorize a script for his presentation, or have general cues and then go with the flow from there?
  • [38:16] - Louis discusses ways to remember the bulletpoints. He and Orion then discuss the potential issues with PowerPoint. Louis then talks about a complete template for doing a powerful presentation every time, which he calls the “Frankenstein template.”
  • [40:11] - Louis and Orion discuss Frankenstein. Louis then shares how the Frankenstein concept relates to creating a compelling presentation.
  • [44:37] - We learn what Louis means by the “message” in the presentation: it’s the one thing that your entire presentation is about, that you want people to remember even if they forget everything else.
  • [45:46]- Louis goes through the different parts of a presentation, linking each of these to body parts to continue his Frankenstein analogy. He gives a specific example of a presentation and how he would apply these concepts.
  • [51:13] - Orion steps in for a moment to discuss the importance of bringing things home for people in a powerful way. Louis elaborates this, offering specific examples again.
  • [53:51] - What does Louis do throughout the presentation for persuasion to plant seeds for the final call to action?
  • [55:09] - What are Louis’ three tips to living a stellar life? 1. The moment you open your eyes in the morning, turn your mind to gratitude. 2. Don’t begin your day until you know how it’s going to end. 3. Don’t blame, don’t complain, and don’t explain.
  • [58:35] - Louis talks about where listeners can find him: his podcast Change Your Story, Change Your Life (where Orion is featured on an episode!). You can also find this podcast on iTunes. He mentions his book Persuasion Genie, and offers a free copy to the first 10 Stellar Life listeners who reach out to him at lousclub@gmail.com. Anyone after those 10 will receive the Frankenstein template in a PDF format along with an ebook on the secrets of powerful storytelling.

Today’s guest, the furiously entrepreneurial Cami Baker, is an international speaker who has given over a thousand presentations to audiences of up to 30,000 people. Cami has been featured on HGTV, as a judge on the Celebrity Apprentice, and in Success From Home Magazine. • [38:58] - How do you take it from the networking stage and into the real world? Orion offers herself up as an example of someone who struggles with the follow-up part.
  • [43:18] - Communication and rapport-building isn’t taught in school, Cami points out.

  • [54:17] - How can people connect with Tracey and her tribe?

  1. For the next two weeks, wake up 30 minutes to an hour early every day and set aside the extra time for meditation.
  2. If you aren’t familiar with meditating, sit still and pay attention to your breath. See how long you can stay focused, and practice doing it for longer.
  3. To obtain clarity on something specific, meditate on that particular topic. You may be surprised by how much clearer the subject becomes after meditation.

Today we're joined by the lovely Antia Boyd, who has spent more than a decade helping single women attract long-term, loving, stable relationships. She struggled for years with trust issues and attracting emotionally unavailable men. In this episode she'll discuss how she finally decided to make a change and how she can help you to do the same.

Connect With Antia:

@HowToFindTheRightMan on Facebook

The Mission Log:

  • [01:20] - Antia shares a bit about herself and her relationship with her husband, Brody. She explains how her background led her to where she is today, and what it took for her to find the man of her dreams.
  • [05:48] - What did Antia learn in her coaching sessions?
  • [09:12] - Antia talks about the “homework” she needed to do while she was going through coaching.
  • [11:57] - Orion talks about a book she’s reading: The Tools by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels. She and Antia then talk about a lesson from the book.
  • [13:48] - Antia discusses the concept of running toward your fears. She explores this by revealing some of the dynamics she has with her husband.
  • [17:57] - What is Antia’s best dating advice for women? Her answer involves bringing energy back to yourself through awareness and questions.
  • [20:40] - We hear Antia’s advice about dating online or through apps. Her advice involves maintaining the same energy as you would in person.
  • [22:47] - Antia elaborates on why you should meet someone in person quickly when online dating, especially with an anxious attachment style.
  • [24:59] - We learn about the benefits of treating every date as a first date, and what that means in practical terms.
  • [26:16] - In terms of getting intimate, Antia doesn’t have a system. Instead, it’s something to do when you feel in alignment and you desire it, not when you’re asking yourself whether you “should.”
  • [28:30] - What does being vulnerable mean to Antia?
  • [31:15] - Antia talks about what to wear when you go out on dates. Her color advice depends on the kind of man you tend to attract, and to avoid letting your clothes wear you instead of the other way around.
  • [37:27] - Authenticity is “100%” important in a relationship, Antia says, and explains why.
  • [39:11] - What are some red flags when you’re dating someone new? She gives some advice on how to steer clear of manipulative and emotionally abusive men.
  • [42:56] - Antia discusses how to set boundaries, and how to communicate it when you have a problem with something your significant other did.
  • [46:47] - What are Antia’s three tips to leaving a stellar life? #1: Really be yourself. If you want to dance or skip or sing, do it! #2: Be authentic, and speak your truth. #3: When you’re dating or with your man, make sure you have some other way to create that same emotional tonality outside of your relationship.
  • [49:19] - Antia talks about where to find her and what she offers, including free coaching at howtofindtherightman.com.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. You attract who you’re being. If you find you’re attracting the wrong kind of men, take a close look at yourself and identify how you’re similar to them.
  2. Identify which of the two types of women you are. One type of woman learns through relationships, and the other kind of woman learns outside of relationships.
  3. If you’re single, work on preparing yourself. Remember that you could meet your life partner any day, so become the woman you want to be for that event.

  • [47:20] - We hear about Evette’s past, and the fact that for many years her motivation was rooted in anger rather than love.
  • [51:47] - When was Evette’s shift from anger to love? She talks about the moment that she felt her two choices were suicide or change.
  • [54:26] - Evette and Orion spend some time talking about Evette’s previous suicidal thoughts, and the topic of suicide in general. Evette then talks about her journey back to herself.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. When you’re traveling, remember to take care of yourself. If you aren’t refreshed and rejuvenated, you won’t be able to give to other people.
  2. Strip away your family values. You don’t need to turn your back on them if they serve you, but do some self-examination and ask yourself who you are without them.
  3. Ask yourself whether you’re figuratively wearing battle armor while walking on a beautiful beach, because you’re still trying to protect yourself from a past trauma.

In this episode, we talk to Alison Armstrong, who is a world-renowned expert on male/female, masculine/feminine dynamics. Alison is an author and a sought-after speaker in gender differences and dynamics, sexuality, relationships, and more. In our conversation, she offers beautiful advice about how to better manage these relationships to lead to greater fulfillment for both partners. She’s here to teach you how to own everything that you are, so you can find love again. I don’t think I could have had a more perfect guest on this Valentine’s day!

Connect With Alison:

Understand Men on Facebook
UnderstandMen.com

The Mission Log:

  • [02:10] - What is the most astonishing discovery that Alison has made about men and women, and they way they connect?
  • [05:02] - Alison has said that we see men as “hairy, misbehaving women.” She talks more about the way the genders interact.
  • [08:20] - Orion points out that men don’t like to report as much as women do; Alison takes it a step further, emphasizing how deeply ingrained it is in men not to expend energy on conversations like this.
  • [10:10] - Alison discusses Orion’s use of the word “obey” in relation to men, and talks about the importance of appreciating people’s good choices.
  • [12:13] - Alison talks about how to view the “part” in “partnership,” how important it is to show appreciation in the other person’s currency, and the “worth it calculation.”
  • [18:43] - What are some ways to find and speak our partner’s love language?
  • [20:02] - Alison offers an example to explain why love languages and appreciation currencies matter. She also talks about the teleclass called The Appreciation Equation on her site.
  • [25:15] - At Alison’s house, she and her husband have something called a “credit tour,” where they point out the things they need to be appreciated for.
  • [25:40] - What makes a woman attractive to a man? Alison’s somewhat surprising answer is that instead of worrying about being attractive, you should show that you’re attracted to him.
  • [30:00] - Orion talks about her Awaken Your Inner Goddess Challenge. She then asks Alison’s advice for what women should do to heal themselves. In her answer, Alison emphasizes the importance of forgiving oneself.
  • [37:09] - When Alison talks about “owning,” is that public or private? And how do we get to a place of owning ourselves and our actions?
  • [40:12] - Alison talks about Valentine’s Day, starting with her aversion to its disempowering history and false beginning.
  • [44:44] - Money is like a man, Allison says, and explains the connection. Again, she emphasizes the need to be impressed and appreciative.
  • [46:42] - Alison offers her advice on healing from betrayal, trusting again, and rediscovering faith in love. Much of this revolves around unspoken expectations on both parts.
  • {53:02] - What are Alison’s three tips for living a stellar life? 1. Figure out what your shortlist (of things you truly need) is. 2. Make clear to everyone who you care about what your needs are, and ask if they’ll provide it to you. 3. Assess whether the shortlist of what people are able to provide to you matches the shortlist of what you need.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Try to avoid asking a man a relationship question unless you want a literal answer. He’s more likely to try to genuinely answer it than to take any hint you intended with the question.
  2. Don’t take it personally if your guy answers your questions about his day with “good” or “fine.” It’s his hunter instinct to conserve energy showing itself.
  3. Be direct about what you want or need from your partner. You need to provide clarity if you want your partner to provide what you’re asking for.

Today's guest is John Gray, the author of one of the top 10 most influential books of the last quarter century, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. He explains how to find a balance between our masculine and feminine sides, how to balance our hormones, and how to form and maintain a soulful, fulfilling, balanced relationship.

Connect With John:

@MarsVenus on Twitter
John Gray Mars Venus on Facebook

The Mission Log:

  • [02:52] - It’s good to get good nutrition, John says, and explains how this relates to romantic relationships.
  • [03:51] - John clearly makes the link between nutrition and hormonal balance, and, in turn, to interpersonal and romantic relationships.
  • [06:57] - The social line between the sexes has blurred, but biologically and hormonally, we’re still distinct. John talks about the challenges and potential for fulfillment that come along with these changes, and mentions his new book Beyond Mars and Venus.
  • [10:11] - What’s John’s definition of masculine versus feminine? In his answer, John talks about testosterone and estrogen levels in both men and women.
  • [15:22] - John talks about how a combination of independence and dependence (or interdependence) looks in practical terms.
  • [17:05] - We learn how being a tyrant is a sign of a man being too far onto his female side.
  • [20:06] - The most destructive thing for a man to do in relationships is to express his anger and fears, or share his vulnerability, with his partner.
  • [21:30] - John discusses what it means for a man to be manly, or to be too far on his female side. He also talks about physical and emotional connections.
  • [26:30] - The real need for men is to feel successful, while for women it’s to nurture.
  • [29:26] - What can a woman do to connect to her feminine side?
  • [34:08] - John explains what vasopressin is, and the function it serves in men and women respectively.
  • [40:20] - How can a single woman find her anchor, security, and self-love in preparation for Valentine’s Day? John’s first piece of advice is to find a boyfriend, which you can do by lowering your standards. Focus on creating a lack of loneliness instead of looking for a soulmate.
  • [45:00] - The secret of learning how to communicate is for women to start sharing whatever they’re feeling, preferably with a man, but with a woman if you can’t find a guy to listen.
  • [46:23] - John talks about when a woman should have sex with a man. When you’re dating, don’t have sex to please a man; make him earn it. When you’re married, it becomes okay to have sex for him if his desire is stronger, but not in the early stages.
  • [49:05] - We hear about John’s daughter Lauren, who provides counterintuitive advice to women: don’t ask men a lot of questions. Let him be interested in you and bond with you by asking questions. Have opinions, but don’t just be opinionated.
  • [52:05] - The most important aphrodisiac for women is to relax. In terms of food, though, the best for women is beets, which contain lithium and therefore release oxytocin. John recommends watching the related video on his site for more information.
  • [55:45] - In the five days around ovulation, a woman’s estrogen levels double, increasing her need for attention, affection, romance, and touch.
  • [56:59] - John had Parkinson’s 16 years ago, but figured out a natural solution for it and restored his brain using super-minerals and amino acids. He then talks about the shakes he has formulated for men and women.
  • [60:59] - John’s testosterone levels now are 25% higher than they were when he was a young man, he reveals. For the average man at his age, testosterone levels are around half of what they were at a younger age.
  • [62:04] - What are John’s three tips for living a stellar life? 1. Single women on Valentine’s Day, plan a fun date with a girlfriend (or own your independent side). 2. Continue to grow in your knowledge and wisdom of how to love more and be loved more. 3. Have a mission and purpose, and get closer to it every day.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Commit to improving your nutrition. Good nutrition contributes to overall good health, which helps you successfully create healthy relationships.
  2. Read John’s new book, Beyond Mars and Venus. It addresses changing relationship dynamics and gender roles, as well as biological differences between the genders.
  3. Women, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, it might be because you’re leaning too far toward your masculine side. Relax and rediscover your own femininity.

However, as she explains in this conversation, she transformed a shocking, heart-wrenching, traumatic experience into a life story that led her to become the amazing person she is today. She also talks about how important it is to silence your inner critic, and explores the steps you can take to feel inspired and empowered in a lasting way, rather than just for days or weeks at a time.

At just 15, she was abducted and gang-raped by members of New Zealand’s Mongrel Mob. • [13:33] - Being one’s word is integral to experiencing true transformation, Sally explains, then goes into depth about how this works. She then talks about the default identity, a disempowered self-image that we adopt and validate.
  • [16:10] - What happened to Sally emotionally when she became a bodybuilder? She then explores the problem with thinking that you’ll be happy once you achieve a certain goal.
  • [19:07] - Forgiving people isn’t the first step in healing, Sally says, then explains what the real first step is.
  • [19:55] - Sally discusses the difference between analytical forgiveness versus experiential forgiveness.
  • [21:10] - We hear about Sally’s experience on 60 Minutes.
  • [22:22] - How do you acknowledge that you are being your own worst perpetrator?
  • [25:50] - Sally talks about the next step, if you have awareness of what you’re doing and but keep sabotaging yourself anyway. Her answer revolves around choice.
  • [27:07] - We learn about Sally’s personal life with her husband and the fact that they haven’t had physical children.
  • [29:43] - Stopping people from hurting permanently is the essence of the education she provides, Sally explains.
  • [30:22] - What was the moment that Sally realized she was healed?
  • [33:33] - Sally shares her journey as it relates to her physicality and body. In the process, she talks about women’s dysfunction about weight.
  • [36:12] - We learn what Sally does in terms of mastering the inner critic.
  • [36:49] - Sally talks about her technique for dealing with the inner critic, which has a lot to do with her work around the default identity. She then explores why asking someone “are you a child abuser?” can help them overcome their own inner critic.
  • [40:07] - Despite having every reason on earth not to trust anything, Sally has managed to achieve and maintain a successful marriage. Here, she explains how she transformed her life and allowed that to happen.
  • [44:07] - Orion shares an overview of her own journey as it relates to healing and love.
  • [47:41] - In Sally’s perspective, what is a leader?
  • [51:19] - What are Sally’s three tips to leading a stellar life? 1. Beliefs run your life, so get disciplined in retraining your thought patterns. 2. Do whatever you can to form a new relationship with your spoken word. 3. Take responsibility, and don’t use excuses like not having enough time, money, or energy prevent you from reclaiming your power.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. First, take a moment to figure out what was the most traumatic event of your life. Next, write down at least five positive things that have resulted from it.
  2. Write down your desires in each of the four main areas of transformation: money, love, vocation, and well-being.
  3. In the last five years, what sustained changes have you made in each of those four areas? Write down a specific list for each area of transformation.

The Co-Pilot:

Dr. Pat Allen, known as the Love Doctor, has been featured all over for her relationship expertise. She has made many appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, Bravo, Millionaire Matchmaker, Fox 11 News, and many more.

In addition to her media appearances, Pat is a bestselling author, a speaker, a psychotherapist, and a communication and relationship expert. She has written many books, including Getting to “I Do,” Staying Married and Loving It, and The Truth About Men. Her newest book, It’s a Man’s World and a Woman’s Universe, will be released soon.

Connect With Pat:

@DrPat_Allen on Twitter
DrPatAllen2 on Facebook

The Mission Log:

  • [01:45] - Pat starts things off by telling us the basics about herself: she’s 82, widowed, with four children, seven grandchildren, and a boyfriend.
  • [2:14] - What got Pat interested in relationships? She answers, then explains how she bases her study of relationships on science.
  • [03:24] - We hear about the differences between men and women in biological terms, with Pat explaining that all fetuses are female for a few days. She then lists several famous men who have (or had) the brain structure of a woman.
  • [08:18] - What’s the best way to deal with a man? Pat’s answer depends on whether the man in question is right-handed or left-handed.
  • [09:36] - What are the things that keep single women up at night? “They haven’t decided to be either a woman with a career or a career woman,” Pat replies, then elaborates on what she means.
  • [10:46] - Pat offers up two pledges, one for men and one for women. The differences between the two reveal the differences between the genders, which she uses to clarify the problem she discussed a moment ago in her friend’s relationship.
  • [13:22] - We hear about how women shift into becoming more like men during and after menopause.
  • [14:27] - What advice does Pat have for young, entrepreneurial women who have a hard time finding a man?
  • [16:28] - Gay couples have the same energy as heterosexual couples, Pat explains, with gay couples having a top (left-lobe) man and a bottom (feminine) man. Lesbian couples involve a butch woman and a femme. She then goes on to talk about codependency, and discusses The Evolution of Desire by David Buss.
  • [21:02] - How can a single woman feel and be more attractive and desirable? Pat’s answer is to be healthy (which she acknowledges may take a lot of doctors). She then discusses how Eric Berne tweaked Freud’s ideas.
  • [24:42] - Part of the journey for single women is to get in touch with the inner child.
  • [26:34] - If you and your husband are running a business together, you can make an appointment to be two men, but it needs to be a business. It’s when you’re trying to be a couple that you need to be a man and a woman.
  • [29:14] - What is it like to act like a woman in a relationship?
  • [30:10] - Pat discusses online dating, and gives more advice on being a woman in a relationship with a man, including not to mother him and to acquiesce to his decisions.
  • [32:47] - What should a woman have in her online dating profile? Pat’s main piece of advice is to market what you want to be in a relationship.
  • [33:52] - When should a single woman have sex with her date? “When she has a contract. Either that or she’s a prostitute and she’s gonna get her money.” Pat then advises women to decide whether they want to get laid or paid, and make their dating decisions accordingly.
  • [35:30] - Before you have a contract with a man, you can do anything except penile insertion.
  • [37:10] - Orion asks how we can trust men. Pat answers that she doesn’t trust anybody.
  • [38:42] - If you give real men free sex, they’ll enjoy it, but men don’t marry vaginas. If they do marry you after you had a passionate courtship, though, don’t be surprised if he asks, “Who is he?” the first time you come home five minutes late.
  • [39:26] - What is Pat’s best dating advice?
  • [40:40] - What is the main problem? Men are in charge of junk (like buying and selling) while we women are in charge of the air of love (accepting, rejecting, and tolerating).
  • [42:25] - A woman should wait until she’s been with somebody for at least a year before getting married.
  • [43:14] - Pat’s advice for single ladies coping with Valentine’s Day is to go dancing. They should then flirt with their eyes; let the man do the speaking. Just look in his eyes and smile.
  • [46:45] - What are Pat’s three tips for living a stellar life? She recommends the book Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill. Second, she advises taking care of your body. Finally, know how to negotiate (not intimidate) and seduce people.
  • [48:08] - Pat talks about her show, which is on talk radio every Thursday from 5-6 pm.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Ladies, when dealing with right-handed men, try not to combine feelings and thoughts; they can handle one at a time, but not both.
  2. Treat your body in a healthy way, especially if you’re looking for a man. Men pick with their eyes, Pat explains, so respect your body.
  3. If you’re a career woman most of the time, practice transitioning into becoming a woman with a career outside of your work hours.

Mission #47

On Board: Michael E. Gerber
Mission: Beyond The E-Myth-From a Company of One to a Company of 1000

The Co-Pilot:

In this episode, I have the honor of having a conversation with the renowned Michael Gerber, who you probably recognize as the mega-bestselling author of 28 ‘E-Myth’ books, in The New York Times™, Business Week, Inc. Magazine, FORTUNE, Forbes and Wired. Perhaps his most famous book is his original: The E-Myth, which has sold over 5 million copies. Luckily for all of us, he just released another book, Beyond the E-Myth. Better yet, you can download the first chapter of Beyond the E-Myth for free by clicking here.

Michael’s emphasis on creating duplicatable business systems has caught on over the years. In 1995, the Wall Street Journal named The E-Myth the #1 business book of all time, and it’s been voted the #1 business book by Inc. 500 CEOs. Michael’s work is available in 145 countries and 29 languages, so it’s no wonder Inc Magazine calls Michael “The World’s #1 Small Business Guru.” In our conversation, Michael shares wonderful insights into how to turn just about anything into a business that’s both meaningful and profitable.

  • [05:30] - In his early days, Michael was a jazz saxophone player, then an encyclopedia salesman, then filled a handful of other unexpected roles. He also shares the role his mother played in his life. He also elaborates on how he got involved in the world of small business.
  • [11:11] - Michael discusses his discovery that most small business owners didn’t understand business, and explains how stopping at a McDonald’s made everything click for him.
  • [13:07] - What is the E-myth? Michael talks about the difference between true entrepreneurs and “technicians suffering from an entrepreneurial seizure.”
  • [14:40] - What are these technicians missing? In his answer, Michael talks about how to take a company of one to a company of one thousand, which is the subject of his new book.
  • [16:45] - Michael talks about the eight steps that form the system in Beyond the E-Myth. The first four steps are these: 1. Developing a dream. 2. Developing a vision. 3. Developing a purpose. 4. Developing a mission.
  • [18:41] - Why those four? Because those are the four products of the four personalities of an entrepreneur, Michael explains.
  • [21:33] - Orion steps in for a moment to rephrase and clarify what Michael has been saying. He agrees with what she says, then elaborates on it.
  • [22:56] - How do you find the right story? Michael answers, and clarifies what he means about finding a story.
  • [24:46] - Michael talks about NewCo (as opposed to OldCo). He then talks about the next four steps, as follows: 1. The job. 2. The practice. 3. The business. 4. The enterprise. This is the “hierarchy of growth,” he says.
  • [28:48] - The job, practice, business, and enterprise system is also a process of a series of steps, Michael explains. He talks us through how this might work for a hypothetical case of helping women with relationships.
  • [31:07] - What do you do once you have the client fulfillment system completed and written out? Next, Michael tells us, you build a turnkey client acquisition system. Lead generation, lead conversion, and client fulfillment should all be addressed in this turnkey system.
  • [32:30] - Michael walks us through an exercise that involves better defining your business by drawing circles with spokes representing various parts of your business.
  • [34:34] - By creating a business in the way Michael describes, you’re creating something you’ll be able to sell, Michael explains.
  • [34:57] - How do you create a manual for every system? “It’s simple, you just learn how to do it,” Michael answers. He recommends going to his site at www.beyondemyth.com to learn more.
  • [36:13] - What makes a good business owner? The abilities to focus your attention and to persevere are the most critical; everything else can be learned.
  • [36:42] - Michael clarifies what he means by focusing on equity over income.
  • [37:42] - What are Michael’s three steps to living a stellar life? What makes him happy? “What makes me happy is when my life is happy,” he shares. Creating also makes him happy, at least most of the time.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Reassess where you are in life. Michael spent years finding himself before his inner entrepreneur woke, so be gentle with yourself if you haven’t found your purpose yet.
  2. Make a list of skills you have that might not be immediately obvious. Think about how these skills might apply to your current (or desired) work.
  3. Assess honestly whether you’re an entrepreneur or a technician. Have you created a business, or have you just created a job for yourself?

Mission #46

On Board: Cassie Piasecki
Mission: Break the Cycle of Yo-Yo Dieting

The Co-Pilot:

If you’re not fully convinced throughout the conversation, just wait until you hear her moving story near the end about a memorable client.

As a fitness and nutrition expert, and the founder of the WOW Life Nutrition Program, Cassie knows all too well about the risk of yo-yo dieting. Her mission is to help women avoid this destructive pattern and achieve long-lasting weight loss by forming good habits and incorporating a total mindset shift.

The Mission Log:

  • [07:07] - Cassie gives some statistics and numbers about weight gain and loss over the holidays, including the scary fact that most people only lose about half of the weight they gain over this time period.
  • [09:36] - The word “restriction” as it relates to dieting doesn’t work for Cassie, and she explains why. In the process, she illuminates the problem with other words with negative connotations that we often use in relation to diets.
  • [11:41] - What language would Cassie use to replace the words that don’t work for her, like “restriction,” “willpower,” and “cheating”?
  • [13:33] - Cassie talks about how she got into the field of health and fitness. We hear about her first attempt to lose weight, which involved learning about portion control. She also discusses how hard it was for her to maintain her weight during the years following her initial success.
  • [16:58] - We hear more about Cassie’s problems with dieting, specifically the issues she had with diet pills. She then discusses her sugar cravings and the related problems.
  • [18:42] - Around the same time, Cassie was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • [20:26] - When Cassie was around 40, she started to get more into nutrition to help her mood and her thyroid.
  • [21:36] - Cassie talks about how she cut out sugar in her diet.

  • [27:18] - Orion steps in for a moment to recommend two books to listeners: Sugar Blues, which explains the effects of sugar, and Wheat Belly, which discusses the effects of gluten.
  • [28:12] - Cassie explains that it’s hard for the average person (without a deep background in health and nutrition) to see personal connections between sugar or gluten and inflammation or disease. Instead, it’s easier to approach the subject from an angle related to mood or sleep quality.
  • [31:25] - Orion talks about her experience growing up in Israel and how it compares to typical food choices in the US.
  • [32:23] - How does Cassie convince people to eat more vegetables? Orion chimes in and offers a tip about starting your day with protein and fat instead of protein and carbs, which Cassie supports.
  • [36:20] - Cassie shares her new food addiction: rice tortillas by Food For Life.
  • [36:43] - Orion talks about her previous episode with Dave Asprey.
  • [37:38] - What are the bad fats that we should avoid? In her answer, Cassie emphasizes the importance of eating mindfully.
  • [40:38] - Cassie talks about the step in between eating a standard American diet and eating a completely clean, mindful diet. She recommends doing it one meal at a time.
  • [42:34] - There’s a lot of emotion tied to food and eating, Cassie points out, and weight gain is often a gradual process.
  • [43:20] - What kind of diet would Cassie recommend for a vegetarian? She talks about vegetarian diets (as a vegetarian herself), especially in light of the question of getting enough protein.
  • [46:45] - Cassie has been trying out going dairy-free, which she says is easy. She also says, however, that she hasn’t noticed feeling any different.
  • [49:14] - We learn more about the “wheel of wellness” and the “wheel of unwellness,” with Cassie giving us a way to visualize these wheels.
  • [52:56] - Cassie shifts into talking about the wheel of wellness, after a vivid description of the experience of being on the wheel of unwellness.
  • [55:21] - Orion asks Cassie for an inspirational success story of one of her clients, and the one Cassie shares certainly fits the bill.
  • [59:03] - Cassie shares her three tips for living a stellar life: 1. Do something active first thing in the morning every day. 2. Eat real food. 3. Find something every day that makes you laugh like crazy.
  • [60:42] - Inspired yet? If so, you’ll be glad to know that Stellar Life listeners have access to a special discount for the WOW Life Nutrition Program. Use promo code “stellar” to save $25 (normal price $199.00). For more information about the program, check out this link.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

  1. Make a list of all of the negative terms you use about dieting and food, like “cheating” and “restriction.”
  2. For each negative word on your list, come up with two or three positive words. Consciously work on changing your phrasing to these positive terms.
  3. Set yourself a challenge of giving up all sugar for three weeks. During this time, observe your body and moods closely to see what a difference this makes.

The Mission Log:

  • [04:49] - Sky starts us off by telling us a bit about who she is.

  • [07:22] - We hear about the problem with the idea of competing over a man, and why any man you would compete for is one you don’t want anyway.
  • [10:06] - Sky explains that abuse is a reflection of prior self-abuse, illustrating how our experiences and environment create profound effects on our later selves. She also discusses the importance of looking to others for examples of how to reach a better life, offering her own experience in the Soviet Union to demonstrate what she means.
  • [16:08] - High achievers and truly successful people get there by having the courage it takes to step up and do what is right for them, Sky explains.

  • [39:42] - People have more trouble forgiving themselves than others, even if they don’t realize it at first, Sky tells us.
  • [40:38] - Sky offers several more tips for confidence. Tip #1: Stop explaining yourself (this goes especially for women). She gives a powerful explanation for this tip.
  • [45:44] - Tip #2 is your body language. Holding a power pose for two minutes dramatically boosts your confidence level, she explains.

Mission #44

On Board: Roger Love
Mission: Set Your Voice Free

The Co-Pilot:

Roger Love is an incredibly compelling -- and skilled -- vocal coach to the stars. His long list of famous clients includes, among many others, Demi Lovato, Gwen Stefani, Reese Witherspoon, and even the renowned Tony Robbins.

As you may have gathered from this snippet of his client list, Roger is one of the world’s leading authorities on voice. In fact, he’s the most commercially successful vocal coach in the speaking and singing fields. He’s been teaching voice since he was just 16 years old, and he brings all this talent and experience to this conversation.

Connect With Roger:

Roger Love
RogerLoveVocals on Facebook
@RogerLove1 on Twitter
RogerLove on Instagram

The Mission Log:

  • [04:10] - We hear about Roger’s background, including his early passion for singing and how this led him into teaching stars as a teenager. He also explains how this led him into becoming a speaking coach.
  • [08:13] - Does Roger think everyone can sing, or are there some people who just can’t? Some people are born with better voices than others, he says, but everyone has an original and unique voice. Even people born without great instruments have the potential to do well if they work hard at it.
  • [10:42] - Roger gives the example of Pavarotti, who decided to be a singer at around 35.
  • [11:44] - Roger discusses his love for taking people like Orion -- who loved singing as a child -- and helping them incorporate musicality into their speaking voices. He also explains that you only have about a second to make your first impression through speaking.
  • [14:45] - What are the five components of voice and how can we best use them? They’re pitch, pace, tone, melody, and volume. He gives some tips on volume, melody, pace.
  • [21:03] - Most people believe there are only two voices: chest voice and head voice. This can lead to speakers or singers getting trapped in one voice or the other because of the difficulty of transitioning between the two. Middle voice gives people the ability to sing between these two ranges without the voice breaking. Roger also explains why the middle and head voice are important even to speakers.
  • [26:05] - Sound waves from your voice vibrate the bodies of listeners. Roger explains why this is important. He also says that the people who sing or speak in the way he teaches for an hour a day increases life expectancy up to eight years (among several other benefits that he lists).
  • [29:25] - Roger tells us how he helped Tony Robbins keep from losing his voice and work through the tremendous amount of wear and tear on his voice.
  • [31:10] - John Gray’s voice wouldn’t work for Tony Robbins, and vice versa, and Roger demonstrates why. He then goes on to talk about how important it is to have different sounds and voices for each character you need to play.
  • [35:52] - “People all need to think about voice first,” Roger tells us. He emphasizes the importance of voice in interactions, and mentions his forthcoming book Set Your Voice Free. It’s a new, expanded edition of his first book, containing everything he’s learned in the 16 years since the original edition came out.
  • [37:02] - Roger talks about what he calls “overlapping frequencies,” which he believes is why children of different genders feel connected before puberty. Once puberty happens and men and women sound different, a divide is created. Overlapping frequencies are the ranges in which men’s and women’s voices tend to overlap.
  • [40:00] - We hear more about Roger’s new book. He also mentions that there’s a partnering website that comes with the book.
  • [42:30] - What makes the best female speakers great? Roger emphasizes the combination of the five voice components he mentioned before, and mentions having a physiology that matches those sounds. He also talks about the problems with parallel gestures -- doing the same thing with both hands at the same time.
  • [46:15] - Roger shares an exercise that can help speakers. Close your mouth, breathe in through your nose, and pretend there’s a balloon in your abdomen. When you breathe in, fill your abdomen; when you exhale, let your abdomen come back in. This is diaphragmatic breathing.
  • [52:21] - Voice is one of the most important ways of establishing self-confidence, Roger tells us.
  • [53:54] - What products of his do Roger recommend? First, he recommends his new book Set Your Voice Free again. He then recommends The Perfect Voice, for which Stellar Life listeners will receive a $50 discount!
  • [55:38] - What are Roger’s three tips to living a stellar life? 1. Record yourself speaking and listen attentively, paying attention to your volume. 2. Record yourself again, this time focusing on having more melody and “walking up the stairs.” 3. Record yourself once more, this time speaking only while your stomach is coming in.

Your Pre-Flight Checklist:

Unless you already tend to speak loudly, work on raising your volume. Don’t be afraid to speak loudly enough to be heard (by others, not just yourself).

Practice incorporating more melody into your speech. Many of us tend to speak monotonously, but incorporating melody will make your voice more compelling.

Practice shifting from downward melodies to upward stair-step melodies, as if the sound is walking up the stairs as you speak.
